Range of Services in our Clinic

The Clinic for Kidney and Hypertension Diseases, Diabetology and Endocrinology covers the entire spectrum of specialist areas in diagnostics and therapy for affected patients and as a comprehensive continuing education center forNephrology and Endocrinology in the region of Saxony-Anhalt.  In patient care, our expertise and focus are in the following: inflammatory kidney diseases (glomerulonephritis) and autoimmune diseases, clarification and adjustment high blood pressure, neuroendocrine tumors, complicated diabetes therapies, diabetic foot syndrome, coordinated care for vascular changes (vascular center), obesity therapy (obesity center) and kidney replacement and blood treatment procedures (continuous, intermittent, immune adsorption, plasma separation, lipidapheresis). We also offer 24-hour on call organized emergency renal replacement therapies. Regionally and nationally, we serve as a competence center for the diagnosis and therapy of renal and (refractory, often secondary) hypertension diseases, endocrinopathies (such as the pituitary gland or thyroid, rare hormone disorders) and neuroendocrine tumors.

In special consultation hours, we clarify renal diseases, metabolic disorders (such as phenylketonuria, phosphate diabetes), thyroid dysfunction, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, pancreas in a specialist medical team. Targeted ultrasound diagnostics and 2h blood pressure measurements are carried out within the clinic.

An outpatient High Blood Pressure Training  takes place every 3 - 4 months and includes topics on the development and treatment of these common diseases. The diabetes education team (diabetes counselor, dieticians, and physicians) is continuously conducting structured diabetes training for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics in accordance with DDG guidelines in a weekly group program supplemented by individual modules. In two of our wards, diagnostics and therapies are carried out according to current guidelines and standards. We are also members of various competence centers of the University Medical Center Magdeburg (liver transplantation, vessels, adiposity, neuroendocrine tumors) and regularly hold case conferences and advanced trainings.

As a university hospital, we offer in Phase II to IV studies, modern therapy options for patients (eg IgA nephropathy, diabetes mellitus, M. Cushing, acromegaly, growth hormone deficiency, neuroendocrine tumors); studies initiated by our team, investigate tools for diabetic nerve damage in the form of an "intelligent" insole. In cooperation with the Laboratory for Experimental Nephrology, we carry out translational projects for the early diagnosis of acute kidney damage and complex inflammatory processes. As a member of the Collaborative Research Center 854, we work closely (Molecular organization of cell-cell communication in the immune system) with various working groups with immunological focus at the Medical Faculty.

We are also particularly interested in the introduction of modern teaching methods in student teaching (inter alia in the field of internal medicine, clinical examination) and in the creation and further development of a medical didactic training program for teachers and students at the faculty.Prof.-Dr.-med.-Peter-R.-Mertens
